Sonora Rally 2027 Goes Three-Day: Pitch Camp Once, Race From It

Sonora Rally trims its 2027 edition to a three-day format run from a single bivouac. Add December schools and a Dakar entry prize, and the sign-up page looks tempting.

Every rally raid veteran knows the real boss fight isn't the dunes. It's packing up camp and doing it all again tomorrow. The 2027 Sonora Rally wants to skip that part.

Organizers say the event runs February 11-14, 2027 in a new three-day format, all from a single bivouac (the rally's temporary tent city) in the San Luis Río Colorado region of Sonora, Mexico. Competitors set up once and race from that base. According to organizers, that trims the cost, time and logistics of moving camp.

Getting to the start line without hauling the farm

San Luis Río Colorado sits just south of the U.S.-Mexico border. Organizers point international racers toward connections through San Diego, Phoenix, Mexicali or Mexico City.

If trailering a full program south sounds like a lot, the Fly-N-Race Moto and UTV rental and support programs are also on offer. Show up, race, go home with stories and less to wash.

Entries open October 15, 2026, and organizers list special incentives for the first 20 entries. The release doesn't spell those incentives out, so check with the rally before you plan around them.

December schools: learn the dunes before the dunes learn you

The Sonora Rally Schools return December 4-6, 2026. Here's the lineup:

  • Navigation School (December 5-6): classroom teaching mixed with dune navigation. Organizers say it's built for Baja racers, desert riders, UTV competitors and newcomers.
  • Advanced Route: no classroom. It uses Dakar-style roadbooks (the route notes rally racers navigate by) and focuses on seat time and navigation training in the dunes.
  • Dunes Clinic (December 4): a new one-day session capped at eight vehicles.

The clinic has a pretty serious faculty. It's led by Skyler Howes, a ZXMoto Joyride Factory rider and former Sonora Rally Road to Dakar winner, along with rally organizer Darren Skilton. Organizers describe both as Dakar veterans. With only eight vehicles on the sand, the instructor-to-student math should look good, though the release doesn't promise any specific ratio.

The Dakar carrot

Sonora remains North America's only official Road to Dakar event, and the prizes are the headline. The winning eligible UTV team earns a paid 2028 Dakar Rally entry valued at more than $33,000 USD. That's a hefty prize for a rally that wraps up in a long weekend.

Motorcycle riders get their own path. Eligible motorcycle finishers earn six Dakar eligibility points toward Dakar 2028. The release doesn't list the eligibility requirements, so read the fine print before you start dreaming of Saudi Arabia.

What it means if you wheel or race

If you've wanted a taste of Dakar-style navigation without a month of vacation days, this looks like a good on-ramp. One camp, a short format and rental options lower the barrier. The December schools give you a way to sharpen your roadbook skills first.

Mark October 15 on the calendar, decide between the schools and the clinic, and book early if the clinic appeals, since eight spots won't last. Pitch the tent once, then spend the rest of the time on the fun part.
