Yokohama GEOLANDAR A/T XD: A Three-Ply Sidewall Tire for Heavy Truck Campers
Slide-in campers are heavy, and your tires know it. Yokohama's new GEOLANDAR A/T XD brings a three-ply sidewall and a snow rating to full-size pickups and vans.

Nobody asks the tires how they feel about the camper. They just hold it up, mile after mile, and never get a thank-you card. Yokohama's new GEOLANDAR A/T XD is aimed at those unsung four, specifically on full-size pickups and commercial vans hauling heavy slide-in campers.
Armor where the trouble starts
Durability is the headline. Yokohama calls its construction GEO-SHIELD, and it combines three pieces: a three-ply sidewall, a full nylon cap and a high turn-up carcass (the tire's internal casing, wrapped higher up the sidewall). The company says the setup is meant to resist impacts and punctures. Reinforced sidewall armor adds protection against side impacts.
The rubber gets attention too. Yokohama describes a high-density compound with a high share of natural rubber, meant to fight cuts and chips. Mud and stone ejectors in the grooves are there to keep rocks from setting up house in the tread, which is the polite version of an eviction notice.
Snow, studs and a wide footprint
The tread is aggressive and packed with wavy sipes, the thin slits that give a tire extra biting edges. The tire carries the Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake symbol, which marks severe snow service. It's also molded to accept optional No. 15 studs, where studs are legal. Check your local rules first.
Yokohama also gave it a wide, flat tread profile, intended to spread stress and promote even wear.
The numbers on the LT275/70R18
The source spotlights one size, the LT275/70R18, which it describes as suited to three-quarter-ton and one-ton trucks. Here's what the listing gives:
- Load Range E
- 3,640 lb rating at 80 psi
- 33.2 inches tall
- 59.3 lb
- 18/32 inch tread depth
The tire launches in 21 sizes covering 16 to 20 inch wheels. Yokohama expects to add more sizes later this year.
What owners are saying
Truck Camper Adventure, which highlighted the tire for camper owners, reports mostly favorable owner reviews. It cites 4.4 stars from 42 reviews at Discount Tire and 4.7 stars from 24 at SimpleTire. The most common complaint is highway noise. The outlet is running a set on its 2018 Ram 2500 and says it will report back after more miles, so a longer-term verdict is still to come.
The takeaway for camper haulers
If your rig lives under a slide-in, this is a tire built with that in mind, at least on paper. Sidewall protection, a severe-snow rating and an option for studs cover a lot of ground for anyone who chases trailheads in shoulder season. Noise on the pavement is the trade-off owners mention most.
The article's most practical advice is also the least glamorous. Compare a tire's load rating with your actual loaded axle weights before you commit. A big number on a sidewall only helps if it's bigger than the number on the scale.
